Bashir Khanbhai B.Pharm (Lon), M.A.(Oxon) is a pharmacist with 25 years experience in manufacturing a wide range of generic pharmaceutical products, toiletries and household products. He established and managed other businesses in Tanzania - tourism, sawmill and plastic container manufacture. Also, he has knowledge and working experience in import/export trade, financial services including the stock exchange, banking and insurance.

 

Experience and knowledge of the workings of the EU institutions enables Bashir to access the EU directly in an efficient business-like manner. As an active past member of: the Committee on Industry, External trade, Energy & Research, Bashir formulated/amended EU legislation that impacts on industry, business, financial services and the internal market. He has published numerous analytical articles on the EU economy and its impact on the UK and other countries. Bashir has worked closely with EU industry and commerce and knows the trade/business organizations. He has established an extensive network of valuable contacts in industry and professional organizations.

 

Bashir has helped developing countries improve their National Indicative Programmes to secure better development grants from the EU. Bashir helped many African Caribbean & pacific (ACP) countries identify small & medium sized indigenous enterprises (SMEs) that can benefit from working with European SMEs in securing transfer of technology to produce high value added goods and services. As Co-Ordinator of the PPE-ED Group for the ACP:EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly and a leading member of the European Parliament Committee on International Development and Co-operation, Bashir’s can assist  ACP countries deal effectively with the EU, especially in improving their relations with the European MEPs and the European Commission.

 

As a popular Member of the European Parliament (1999-2004), Bashir has valuable contacts with the Commission, the EU Council and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). During his 5 years in Parliament, Bashir was invited by the Government of India to meet its President, Prime Minister, Foreign & Finance Ministers to discuss economic and political co-operation with the EU. Bashir was invited by the Government of Ethiopia to assess the famine there and his Report persuaded the European Commission to increase its aid package by a significant amount. He was invited by the Government of Mauritania to assess their economic development, especially the development of fish processing to increase export value.

 

As the European Parliament Rapporteur for “Combating Communicable Diseases:HIV/AIDS, TB & Malaria”, Bashir is determined to help all stakeholders in working with the EU to identify, treat and eradicate these diseases that have a devastating impact on the economies of poor countries. His crucial role in amending EU pharmaceutical and veterinary legislation has won him many friends in the EU pharmaceutical industry, European Pharmaceutical wholesalers and the European National Pharmaceutical Associations.

Bashir’s knowledge of the Middle East and his active participation in promoting interfaith exchange between the EU and the Middle East have enabled him to build valuable contacts with governments of these countries. Soon after September 11 attack on New York, the British Government invited Bashir to be the UK Government special envoy for a goodwill mission to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.
